WeTransfer, the widely used file-sharing service, has issued a formal clarification assuring users that their content will not be utilized for Artificial Intelligence training. The statement follows a recent update to its terms of service, which prompted significant public concern and backlash.

On July 1, 2025, they began notifying users about their updated Terms of Service, which will take effect on August 8. This new Terms of Service will grant them the license to use user-uploaded content for a wide range of purposes, including voice recordings, which could extend to internal product development.
The version of the Terms that was published include ‘License to WeTransfer’ which simply means that the sharing service will be granted a perpetual, worldwide, royalty free, transferrable and sub-licensable license to use user’s content to operate, develop and improving the service of new technologies, including to improve performance of machine learning models that enhance their content moderation process.
By our Privacy and Cookie policy, this license includes the right to modify, publicly display, and perform the content. Also, the user will not be entitled to compensation for any use of content by the platform under these terms.
This sparked outrage and confusion among users, hence the platform has come out to remove the Artificial lines training clause in its updated data policy.
According to the file sharing service, it also rephrased the whole Terms of Service using clearer wording to “avoid confusion.”
The updated policy reads:
“License to WeTransfer: To allow us to operate, provide you with, and improve the Service and our technologies, we must obtain from you certain rights related to Content that is covered by intellectual property rights. You hereby grant us a royalty-free license to use your Content to operate, develop, and improve the Service, all under our Privacy & Cookie Policy”.
The service further assured the public that they do not sell content to third parties and by using the platform, you are only granting them the permission to ensure they improve the service properly. Also, your content is always yours, and you retain all rights to it.
Industry experts have however, encouraged the voiceover community to decide if ‘avoiding confusion’ as stated in We Transfer’s updated data policy, means the same thing as reversing a policy, and to seek legal advice when determining unclear language.
