The Canadian Association of Voice Actors (CAVA) has called on all major political parties to enact laws protecting all Canadians’ voices, images, names, and likenesses (VINL).
The Association made this request in a letter signed by its president, Tanya Buchanan, and addressed to the major political parties in Canada on April 14, 2025.
In the letter, Buchanan pointed out some of the threats the advances made in generative artificial intelligence technology pose to the voice industry, emphasizing that it is an issue not just for voice actors but for the entire country.

In her words, “It might come as a shock to many, but your voice can be cloned, copied, scraped, stolen, and used without your permission in Canada.”
Advances in generative artificial intelligence technology mean that full voice clones can be created with only a few seconds of recording,” she said.
Buchanan noted that there are numerous ways in which this emerging technology can exploit people, citing the notorious “grandparent phone” scam, where voice cloning is used to impersonate a grandchild’s voice to con people out of their hard-earned money, as a perfect example.
According to the President, CAVA supports the principles that every citizen should have CONTROL over their VINL, be able to CONSENT to the use of their VINL, and be COMPENSATED for the use of any digital reproduction of their VINL. These are collectively known as the 3Cs rights.
The letter added that it is the belief of CAVA that when the rights of Canadians are clarified, it would help set the stage for a stronger creative economy that supports continued technological advances that are fair, informed, and responsible.
