The Interview
Tell us about yourself and how you started in voiceover.
My name is Oguama Nnaemeka, popularly known as Able or AbleSounds in the voice acting world. I studied metallurgy, and I’m currently working in Moscow as a singer and now, a voice actor. I started by just voicing things for people for their YouTube, church videos, etc., then moved on to my content and demos, learning to edit and training my voice for excellence.
What inspired you to pursue this career?
I’ve always felt chills from cool narration voices that talk about deep philosophies, the universe, and even Nat Geo Wild. Also, I love the passion of characters and the intensity in some animation voices like Goku. Basically, that’s what I want to do.
Who has inspired you the most in the voiceover industry?
Voices like Aleks Le in Solo Leveling, Sean Schemmel as Goku, and AbleSounds…
What kinds/types of voiceover projects have you worked on, and which of them excite you the most? What are some of your proudest voiceover moments and why?
The project that excites me the most that I’ve done so far is my first demo. Why? because I made it myself from scratch. The process of learning every step and focusing on doing them for hours and hours, then seeing everything come together, that puts a smile on my face.
How do you approach character development for a voiceover role? (Describe your
creative process)
Personally, I don’t ‘act’, I embody the character and express myself. How? I close my eyes and use my imagination.
Walk us through your workflow; how do you prepare for a voiceover session or
recording?
I clear my mind. Everything outside of what I am about to do is a distraction then I begin.
How have you been improving your skills?
Keyword feedback. Just like in singing and communication, I get my feedback either by rewatching a recording or from others, and then I make adjustments.
What challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them?
The biggest challenge is inconsistency, and accountability has helped me a lot.
What are your career goals in the VO industry?
To be the best animation voice actor in Africa and one of the best globally.
What’s the most ridiculous fee you’ve ever accepted for a voiceover project, and
how did it happen?
I just started looking into gigs, so I haven’t done any yet.
Have you ever worked with an annoying or overly demanding client? Tell us your most unforgettable ordeal!
Nope. I haven’t had any yet.
What advice would you give to other upcoming voiceover artists?
Be willing to pay the price for what you want.
